Lady Spartans capture title

Running in Burleson seems to be something Centennial’s cross country team enjoys.

Competing at Friday’s Elk Run 16 at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex, the Lady Spartans took first place and the Spartans finished third in the Class 6A-5A Division.

“I felt pretty good about how things turned out,” Centennial coach Sarah Eden said. “I loved the course and I’m excited that it is going to be our district course. Coach Enis at Burleson did a great job setting it up.”

The Lady Spartans tallied 31 points to win easily. Richland was second with 110 points and Northwest Eaton placed third with 124 points.

“I’m very excited my girls are running in a pack,” Eden said. “That’s pretty cool because I’ve never had this type of depth on the girls team. I’ve had that on boys side before.”

Centennial’s girls had four runners in the top six.

Junior Sarah Trammel was second in a time of 18 minutes, 35.29 seconds. Freshman Harli Woolsey finished third in a time of 18:49.11. Junior Abi McCandless placed fifth in a time of 19:14.98 and sophomore Ashley Campbell was sixth in a time of 19:16.59. The Lady Spartans fifth runner was senior Kayla Whitmire who placed 16th in a time of 20:30.33.

Also running for the Lady Spartans were sophomores Vantashia Bond (24th, 20:39.12) and Marina Grimaldo (28th, 20:52.43), senior Rainey Southall (49th 21:35.32) and juniors Jordan Lamond (52nd, 21:39.79) and Serena Bersuch (56th. 21:43.07).

The Spartans scored 117 points to finish third. Mansfield Summit was first with 74 points and Eaton finished second with 95 points.

“The boys are getting better but we still need to get our top five runners closer together,” Eden said.

The Spartans were led by junior Trenton Kelly who finished second in a time of 16:21.83. The next three Spartans to finish were sophomores Trevor Pennington (20th, 17:02.91), Nick Newby (21st, 17:03.22) and Andy Shue (41st, 17:25.99). Junior Derek Larabell finished 43rd in a time of 17:27.87.

Also running for the Spartans were senior Darien Burley (46th, 17:31.68), juniors Ryan Valdez (55th, 17:37.96) and Chris Vardy, (57th, 17:41.07), freshman Christian Bersuch (63rd, 17:45.75) and Caleb Conrad (68th, 18:16.62).

Saturday, Centennial hosts the Spartan Invitational on a course at the high school. Eden said the event wouldn’t be possible without the aid of Kerr Middle School cross country coach Matt Hansen and 20 or so members of the booster club.

“They step up and make everything possible,” Eden said.
