Lady Elks recognize senior class

Burleson finishes third, opens softball playoffs next week

Thanks to an 11-2 District 9-5A win over Everman Tuesday night, Burleson’s softball team will open the playoffs next week on a five-game winning streak.

The Lady Elks (13-11, 9-5), who haven’t lost in April, finished in third place in 9-5A. Burleson could play either Midlothian or Mansfield Lake Ridge from District 10-5A in the first-round of the post-season. The teams are tied for second place in 10-5A and complete district play Friday.

Also on Tuesday night, the program honored a talented senior class. Recognized were Zoe Miranda, Saeya Esparza, Taylor Sutton, Shania Santillan and manager Allie Black.

“They are an awesome group,” Burleson coach Summer Owen said. “They are good leaders and do everything I ask of them on and off the field. They are leaving big shoes to fill. They will definitely leave a hole for us next season.”

With the game tied 2-2 heading to the bottom of the second, the Lady Elks reeled off nine unanswered runs to put the game away.

Esparza led the offense with two doubles and two RBI. Kyleigh Rich doubled and drove in two runs. Miranda and Sutton each doubled and finished with an RBI. Lauren Isbell and Natali Wheeler each drove in runs.

Rich tossed three innings for the Lady Elks allowing two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking three. Morgan Barnes blanked the Lady Bulldogs for four innings. She gave up three hits, struck out two and walked two.

Lady Elks Top Crowley

Thursday night, the Lady Elks rallied from a 2-0 road deficit to defeat Crowley, 12-2.

Miranda stayed on her torrid hitting streak, going 4-for-5 with a double. Lauren Isbell, Sarah Alexander and Maddie McGovern each drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Starting pitcher Kyleigh Rich helped herself with a double and an RBI. Rich scattered four hits and allowed two runs (none earned) in seven innings of work. She stuck out two and walked two.

Bridgette Montes doubled in a run and Lauren Minor hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly.
