Elks share district title
Freddy Hernandez scored a pair of goals as Burleson’s boys soccer team hit a trifecta of sorts Tuesday night.
The tallies gave the Elks a 2-0 District 9-5A win at Crowley, and helped Burleson clinch a playoff berth and a share of the district title.
The Elks share the title with Everman. The Bulldogs, by virtue of a tiebreaker, will be the top seed in the playoffs. Burleson will be the No. 2 seed and will open the post-season against Midlothian.
“It was a long road and we just kept plugging away at it,” Burleson coach Travis Hughes said. “The kids started believing in what coach Kiene and I were telling them. Once we got a little momentum, we found we could play with anybody and we ended up proving it.”
Friday night, the program honored its senior class before a 1-0 victory over Arlington Seguin. Alex Devora scored the lone goal for the Elks.
The seniors honored were Britt Jones, Erik Lopez, Rylen Sibley, Alan Zaragoza, Bryan Miranda and Cailsey Hill.
“These seniors were sophomores when I took over and they have bought into everything the coaching staff was doing,” Hughes said. “When the season started, there was a different vibe with this team and they are part of the reason for that. All their hard work paid off this season with a trip to the playoffs.”
