Gala raises cancer patient care funds
Well over 320 Johnson County residents attended the 14th annual ATHENA Gala held March 4 at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield.
The Mardi Gras Gala is hosted annually by the ATHENAs, who designed the fun-filled event to include a VIP reception, casino play, silent and live auctions and, traditionally, magnificent food.
ATHENA officials were still waiting for final numbers this week, but it is known the financial goal was met and probably exceeded, said Patsy Dumas, member and past president of the organization.
The ATHENA Society of Burleson was formed in October 2003 with the primary goal of reaching into the community to help Johnson County cancer patients, their families and caregivers, according to the organization’s Facebook page.
After 10 fundraising events, the ATHENA Society has presented over $395,000 to organizations that provide support for Johnson County residents battling cancer, the Facebook page states.
The ATHENA Society knows there are services other than medical treatment that provide comfort and peace of mind to patients as they battle cancer. The group works cooperatively with The Careity Foundation to administer these programs for uninsured and underinsured residents.
“This is our mission – and we love our mission statement,” Dumas said.
